Greetings!

Are you in a hurry?  Are you aware already of the scope of my teaching, and perhaps just need details of how I work, or maybe what my students have written about me, or my teaching qualifications, experience or fee structure?  In that case, skip the paragraphs below and go to the References and/or Detailed Information page (click the link).  Otherwise, for a summary of what I offer, where I live, my relevant qualifications and experience, read on!

I offer private music tuition in two formats: one-to-one and occasionally, group lessons.  In one-to-one music lessons I teach children (6+), adolescents and adults, from beginner to advanced levels, on most conventional instruments and voice.  I also have experience teaching music to those with severe learning disabilities.  While I specialise in jazz, improvising and popular music genres such as rock, soul/R&B and pop, I also at times have students focused on (western) classical music.

I teach piano, saxophone, trumpet/flugelhorn, flute, guitar, double bass, electric bass, drums and voice/singing, including "scat" singing and "vocalese".  I am also experienced and happy to assist with audition preparation and working toward performance and theory Grade Exams (in any genre, on any instrument, for any exam board: ABRSM, Trinity, LCM, Rock School etc.).  In addition, I teach lyric writing, song writing, composing, arranging, and since I am a qualified teacher, am happy to assist with BTEC, GCSE and 'A' Level performing, course work, revision and writing (for reports and papers etc.).  All this includes relevant music theory, history and appreciation and musicianship skills, such as efficient practising strategies and reading music.

Elsewhere on this site, see the Detailed Information page for links to descriptions of my background, qualifications and teaching approach and 'philosophies'.  In addition, you also might like to read some of the many unedited personal references, kindly bestowed, from a wide variety of my students, which I hope will give you some idea of my teaching demeanour.  The remaining three paragraphs on this page describe my location and travel options, and my relevant qualifications and long-term teaching posts.

Whilst generally I teach at home, I will consider travelling to the student, particularly for school-age children.  I live an easy 5-minute walk from the Leytonstone (Central Line) tube station (see my address and phone numbers below), or if you prefer to drive, parking is free on my street, which is just off the Green Man roundabout, the Leytonstone exit off the A12 (which extends the A102 north from the Blackwall Tunnel).  Alternatively, visit Transport for London's Journey Planner webpage for other options from your location.

I have a variety of teaching qualifications, including a BA (Hons) in Music Education, gained in 2006, that also conferred Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) (which qualifies me to teach in secondary and tertiary schools, i.e. Key Stages 3 to 5 and above).  In 2003, at Birkbeck College, UCL, I completed a Certificate in Lifelong Learning.

From 2006, in addition to teaching music privately since 2000, I've taught jazz and pop genres on a one-to-one basis in the jazz piano "chair" at Tonbridge School (Kent), a prestigious senior independent school.  In and around London, I've also been a classroom teacher in state secondary schools, teaching the National Curriculum for Music.  Since September 2010, I've been teaching — for the London Borough of Newham's visionary Every Child a Musician (ECaM) scheme small groups of 8 to 12 year-olds in Newham's primary and secondary schools.  Since September 2014, at London Music Academy (based at Sir George Monoux College in Walthamstow, E17), I also teach piano and keyboard skills to all ages on a one-to-one basis and to small groups of teens attending the college's Level 3 BTEC Music courses.  Finally, since September 2015 I've been teaching piano and keyboard skills to adult learners (18+) for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets' Idea Stores division (the borough's network of libraries and adult learning centres).

I hope this information has intrigued and encouraged your interest in music lessons, and I very much look forward to hearing from you and to helping with your progress in music.

All the best,

Claude Alexander
