Detailed Information

Making music is the activity about which I have been most passionate throughout my life, and since January 2000, I've discovered a similar passion for teaching.  Although I've taught music on a one–to–one basis at various times in my life, it's been since then that I've had the most interest and commitment, and this is reflected in the training I've undertaken for the profession in recent years.  Additionally, I value highly the opportunity as a teacher to contribute to my local and neighbouring communities, to help others to enhance their knowledge and appreciation of music and progress their skills, confidence and pleasure in being active participants in it.

Teaching Experience Overview

Overall, I have a fairly broad range of teaching experience, as it includes, within a variety of learning contexts and professional roles, music, numeracy, literacy and other National Curriculum subjects besides music (as a supply teacher).  The learning contexts include college, state and independent secondary schools, small–group workshops, distance–learning and one-to-one lessons.  My roles have included curriculum design, lesson planning and teaching, supply teaching and lecturer.  In addition to teaching music to individuals privately, my professional teacher training has led to a variety of external posts, including:

  • One-to-one teaching...

    — in the Jazz Piano ‘chair’ at Tonbridge School (Kent), a senior independent school

    — of piano, to all ages (5+), for London Music Academy, based at Sir George Monoux [Sixth Form] College in east London (E17)

  • Small-group and workshop teaching...

    — of piano, to adults (18+), for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets' Idea Stores division (the borough's network of libraries and adult learning centres)

    — of keyboard and other instruments, in primary and secondary schools of the London Borough of Newham with its visionary Every Child a Musician (ECaM) scheme

    — of musicianship and music appreciation skills as curriculum leader and teacher of Tower Hamlets College's music enrichment programme

  • Classroom teaching of the National Curriculum for Music in outer- and inner-London state comprehensive secondary schools (Key Stages 3, 4 and 5), such as at Debden Park High School (Loughton, Essex)

I hope this has been helpful and encouraging.  If you have any questions or wish to enquire about lessons, I'd be very pleased to hear from you (020 8530-0710).

Looking forward,

Claude Alexander
